On-Line Counselling

Online/Telephone therapy refers to therapy conducted via the internet or telephone. Some people may prefer to use video conferencing, so that we can see each other as we speak and some may prefer to use just the audio. This mode of therapy has evolved as our lives have become much busier, with not enough time in each day. Online counselling allows flexibility and convenience, enabling you to approach those difficult aspects within your life, from the comforts of your own home.

Benefits and challenges:

Some of the benefits of therapy online/via telephone:

  • You can create a comfortable and private space in your own home, from which you attend therapy

  • You may find it easier to talk this way, be able to focus and express yourself
  • You may enjoy being in your own home wearing your comfortable attire and avoiding a commute to and from the session
  • We can be more flexible when scheduling appointments
  • Research has shown that online/telephone therapy is as effective as face-to-face.
  • Problems with internet connection
  •  That we cannot view each other clearly. In this case, I would advise that you do a test run with your device, so that we avoid not viewing each other clearly.

Guidance:

I would encourage you to treat an online session just in the same way as you would do in a face-to-face session. Find a comfortable chair with a supportive back and if needed, for you to get up and move around if you become uncomfortable. Ensure that you cannot be disturbed during your session by placing a note on the door or by inform others that you wish not to be disturbed; only in an emergency. Feel free to wear headphones if you have them. The benefits are, that they can keep the content of the session private, improves sound quality and minimises distractions. You are welcome to bring water or a cup of tea/coffee with you into the session. Please avoid alcohol and drugs, prior to and during the session. Therapy can be a difficult experience and it can leave you feeling tired or even distracted after a session. Therefore, give yourself some time after the session to process the session before re-joining your family, working or making calls.

Emergencies: In the event you are feeling suicidal, the Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, by calling 116 123 (Free call). Check other local services or talk to someone you know. I also recommend the Stay Alive app, developed by Grassroots Suicide Prevention.
